Attractions
It is unlikely that you will not have heard something of the attractions of Donegal, the most beautiful county in Ireland, but we take the opportunity to remind you of some of those within easy reach of Naomh Conal holiday cottage. Whatever your interest, there is sure to be something here to hold it.Antiquities and curiosities: All sorts of these from the Neolithic cromlech to the Victorian castle, all accessible and memorable.
Beaches: Many nearby, ranging from the enormous to wee, intimate, golden sandy coves. Carrickfin Blue Flag beach is visible from the cottage. The water is crystal clear. You will probably be the only ones on the sands.
Cycling: Hire a bike and explore the hilly, traffic-free, roads hereabouts. Your host is a former racing cyclist. Plenty of tips available.
Dance: You can enjoy traditional dancing at Teach Jack's pub every Tuesday. Visitors and learners are welcome. Mind the Dresser! Disco stuff at several venues.
Eating: Excellent fare can be had at a variety of restaurants, hotels and pubs nearby.
Fishing: If out-smarting fish is your game, then we have some of the cutest piscatorial customers awaiting your challenge in our hundreds of lochs and burns. The ocean is full of them too. Plenty of boats for hire.
Golf: If you want to spoil a good walk, then we have several 9 hole courses at hand and two championship ones about 50 kms or so away. All have lovely coastal settings and visitors are welcome. Glebe Gallery: This is an art gallery in a beautiful loch-side setting.
History: We are steeped in this, much of it concerning the bitter struggle against the English. Our tragic past is recalled in visitor centres at Dunlewey, Dunfanaghy, Rathmullan, Doagh and Donegal Town, among others.
Ionad Cois Locha is the biggest tourist attraction in the North West and it is only 20kms away. Everything to exhaust children and interest adults. Try a cruise on the loch.
Jealousy is what your friends will feel when they get your postcard from Donegal!
Leisure is what we are good at. Here, mãnana is needlessly urgent.
Mountains here are all easy to climb and offer spectacular views over the Atlantic and the islands.
Nature: The vast National Park at Glenveagh with castle and gardens is only 15 kms away as the crow flies and it is beautiful.
Oiláin: Some of the numerous small islands are inhabited to this day and ferries ply back and forth. Aranmór and Toraigh are worth a visit.
Pubs: We are not a nation of dipsomaniacs, but you'd never guess that from the number of pubs we have. If you want to meet people, there's no better place than an Irish pub.
Questions and answers: You supply the former and Lynda will supply the latter.
Rest and relaxation: Let the peace of place get to you. Curl up on the couch wirh a book and a braon beag uisce beatha (a wee dram)
Song and music of all kinds can be enjoyed practically every night in many local pubs, especially in Tabhairne Leo, the home place of Enya and Clannad. This county boasts some great traditional musicians. Catch a session. Join in, if you can.
There are several genealogical centres in the county where you can research your Irish ancestry. You are bound to have some. Everyone does.
